Clinical neuropsychologists use standardized tests to assess individuals across a variety of domains. In order to accurately assess performance from neuropsychological measures, scores from the population are compared to a normative sample so to establish empirically the presence, or absence of impairment, and moreover, the credibility of test scores. Normative data are collected from a large sample and are intended to be representative of the population of interest, particularly in terms of demographic variables. Thus, to have a truly valid comparison, the clinical population of interest and the normative sample should be matched as closely as possible.
Yet, there are little to no neuropsychological normative data that account for cultural, language, ethnic, and several other sociodemographic factors. Indeed, many neuropsychology measures themselves have not been validated in diverse samples, including those who are not Caucasian, have low socioeconomic status, or speak English as a second language. This lack of normative data may lead to inaccurate diagnostic conclusions and is worrisome given the diversifying nature of our Canadian population. It is necessary that psychological norms are available for each person we examine so to ensure that our diagnostic opinions stand of firm scientific grounds.
In this program of research, we will administer a host of psychological tests to participants from a variety of backgrounds so to examine how various sociodemographic factors relate to performance on psychological tests and from here, establish norms that are representative of persons with diverse backgrounds.
Partnering with the non-profit organization MITACS, Q-medical will play an essential role in funding this program of research and in turn, assist clinicians in their examination of individuals with diverse backgrounds so that they might reach more reliable and valid diagnostic conclusions of persons with diverse backgrounds by way of newly available norms stratified by various sociodemographic variables. We believe that this work is both necessary and essential as the cultural fabric before us continues to grow in hand with the clinical services we provide at Q Medical.
